WHY YOGA?!
I don’t exactly remember how I got introduced to yoga but I would say it probably stems from me wanting to deepen my flexibility as a collegiate track and field hurdler. I always appreciated the challenges yoga posed to me which is why I resonated with it because it showed me that my body was capable of things I never imagined. Fast forward to 2018, when a friend I met at the gym playing basketball challenged me to hot yoga class and it’s remained part of my workout repertoire ever since.
I never imagined myself as an instructor because I never saw anyone who looked like me leading classes at the studios I attended. Matter fact, my friend and I were often the only males and black people in the classes we attended. When I was approached about joining a teacher training program to become a certified instructor, I wasn’t interested initially. However, as the studio managers persisted to ask, I realized I had something to offer in the yoga space: a diverse background and experiences that could open doors for more males and people of color to practice yoga. I wanted to be a representation for what I didn’t see when I started practicing yoga and imparts on other the mental and physical benefits practicing yoga has gifted me.
